Important information was conveyed by the head of the Egyptian Suez Canal Authority, Osama Rabi. He reported a significant reduction in the canal’s revenues by 25 percent in the last fiscal year. This is due to an increase in attacks by Yemeni Houthis on merchant ships in the Red Sea. Shippers have started choosing alternative routes due to the risk, leading to a drop in revenues to $7.2 billion in fiscal year 2023–2024. Last fiscal year, the canal earned $9.4 billion. Rabie also cited a decrease in the number of ships passing through the canal by about 2,500 to 20,148 vessels.
Major shipping companies have decided to temporarily change the routes of their cargo ships, avoiding the route through the Red Sea and preferring to bypass Africa from the western side.
