🇧🇯 BREAKING: Soldiers Announce Overthrow of Government in Benin, Gunfire Reported in Cotonou

Cotonou, Benin – In a sudden and destabilizing development, a faction of soldiers in Benin announced the overthrow of President Patrice Talon in a televised address today. The announcement plunges the West African nation, often hailed as a bastion of democracy and stability in the region, into profound uncertainty.

According to the broadcast on national television, uniformed military officers declared that they had “dissolved the government” and “closed all borders.” The statement cited a need to restore “national dignity” and address the country’s trajectory, though specific grievances were not detailed in the initial announcement.

Simultaneously, residents of Cotonou, Benin’s largest city and economic hub, reported sustained gunfire near the presidential residence. The sounds of automatic weapons have created a climate of fear, with civilians urged to stay indoors. The status and location of President Talon remain unconfirmed at this hour.

President Talon, a former businessman, was first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2021 under controversial circumstances following a significant narrowing of the political landscape. His tenure has been marked by rapid economic reforms but also by increasing accusations of authoritarian drift, including the persecution of political opponents and a crackdown on press freedom.

Benin has been viewed as a democratic success story since its transition from Marxism-Leninism to multiparty democracy in the early 1990s. It has experienced peaceful transfers of power and avoided the coups that have troubled its neighbors like Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso in recent years. This military intervention, if confirmed, would mark a dramatic rupture from that tradition and a significant expansion of the “coup belt” in West Africa.

Regional bodies, including the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union, are yet to issue formal statements. The international community is likely watching with extreme concern, given Benin’s strategic coastal location and role in regional security.

This is a developing story. Our blog will continue to monitor the situation closely, providing updates on the security conditions in Cotonou, the response from regional allies, and the unfolding political crisis.
