🇪🇹 Ethiopian PM Abiy Ahmed Launches “Pulse of Africa,” A New Pan-African Media Platform to Reclaim the Continent’s Narrative

In a significant move to challenge long-standing negative stereotypes and reshape how the world sees the continent, Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed has officially launched “Pulse of Africa,” a new Pan-African media platform.

The initiative, announced by the Prime Minister on his social media channels, is designed to counter what he describes as persistent and damaging misrepresentations of Africa in global media.

“Although Africa is vast and full of potential, it has too often been portrayed as smaller and less capable than it truly is,” Abiy wrote, pinpointing a core grievance shared by many across the continent. For decades, international media coverage has frequently focused on a narrow spectrum of issues—conflict, disease, and poverty—while underreporting on Africa’s dynamism, economic growth, cultural richness, and innovation.

A “Humble” Beginning with Continental Ambitions

Positioning the platform as a foundational project, Prime Minister Abiy described Pulse of Africa as a significant, though “humble,” beginning. He expressed strong confidence in its potential to evolve into a leading media voice for the continent.

“Pulse of Africa represents a significant, though ‘humble’, beginning with the potential to become a leading continental media platform,” the prime minister stated. He emphasized that this is more than just a news portal; it is a strategic effort to build a unified and authentic African perspective in the global information space.

Laying the Foundation for an African Industrial Powerhouse Narrative

The launch of Pulse of Africa is framed within a broader, forward-looking vision for the continent. PM Abiy directly connected the platform’s mission to Africa’s economic and developmental trajectory.

He stated that the platform will “lay the foundation for a strong and authentic African voice in global media, reflecting Africa’s trajectory toward becoming a major industrial powerhouse.” This suggests that Pulse of Africa will not only report on news but will actively curate and highlight stories of industrialization, technological innovation, sustainable development, and economic success that are often overlooked.

The platform is expected to join a growing ecosystem of Afrocentric media initiatives dedicated to telling African stories, by Africans, for the world. Its success will be closely watched by those who believe that controlling one’s narrative is a crucial step toward true political, economic, and cultural sovereignty.

As Pulse of Africa finds its footing, it carries the weighty expectation of becoming a microphone for the continent, amplifying the diverse, vibrant, and powerful pulse of a rising Africa.
