Sawiris Bets on Culture, Entertainment and Heritage to Revive Egypt’s Tourism Industry

Egyptian billionaire Naguib Sawiris is doubling down on investments aimed at transforming the visitor experience at some of the country’s most iconic ancient monuments. Through his company, Sawiris is expanding investments in tourism infrastructure and visitor facilities, while embracing major sporting events and international music concerts as part of a broader strategy to attract more travelers to Egypt.

The move reflects a growing trend in the global tourism industry, where destinations are increasingly combining cultural heritage with modern entertainment to create year-round attractions. Egypt, home to some of the world’s most celebrated archaeological treasures, is seeking to strengthen its position as one of Africa’s leading tourism destinations by offering visitors more than traditional sightseeing experiences.

According to the investment strategy, improvements will focus on upgrading facilities at historic sites, enhancing visitor services, improving accessibility, and creating a more comfortable experience for both domestic and international tourists. Modern amenities are expected to complement, rather than overshadow, Egypt’s rich historical legacy.

In addition to infrastructure development, Sawiris’ company believes that hosting high-profile international events can significantly boost tourism numbers. Major sporting competitions, cultural festivals, and performances by globally recognized artists such as Colombian pop superstar Shakira are being viewed as powerful tools to attract new audiences and encourage repeat visits.

Tourism experts say entertainment-led tourism has become an increasingly important driver of economic growth. Large-scale concerts and sporting events generate international media attention, increase hotel occupancy, stimulate local businesses, and create employment opportunities across the hospitality, transport, and retail sectors.

For Egypt, the strategy represents an effort to diversify its tourism offerings while capitalizing on its unique blend of ancient history and modern entertainment. By creating memorable experiences that combine visits to world-famous archaeological sites with international events, the country hopes to appeal to younger travelers and a broader global audience.

The investment also comes as African countries continue to explore innovative approaches to growing their tourism sectors. Across the continent, governments and private investors are increasingly recognizing that cultural heritage, creative industries, sports tourism, and entertainment can work together to drive sustainable economic development.

If successful, Sawiris’ expanded investment could serve as a model for other African nations seeking to maximize the economic potential of their historical landmarks while preserving their cultural heritage. By balancing conservation with modern visitor experiences, Egypt aims to strengthen its tourism industry, attract foreign investment, and reinforce its reputation as one of Africa’s premier travel destinations.

As competition for global tourists intensifies, strategic investments in infrastructure, world-class events, and heritage conservation are expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of African tourism.
