Ethiopia inaugurates two new turbines at Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)

According to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the 3rd and 4th turbines of the GERD’s spillways have been opened, releasing an additional 2,800 cubic meters of water per second.

The GERD plays a vital role in regulating water flow, reducing flood risks, and guaranteeing a consistent water supply for downstream countries, particularly during drought periods, stressed Abiy Ahmed.

This launch will contribute to significant improvements in agricultural productivity, power generation, and resource utilization in the region, emphasized the prime minister.

The construction of the GERD had earlier sparked a long-running dispute between Ethiopia and its downstream neighbors, Sudan and Egypt, over water access and control.
