Gmail Users Can Now Change Their Email Addresses

Google is rolling out a new option that lets Gmail users change their @gmail.com address without creating a whole new account, while keeping their data, inbox history, and Google services connected to the account [5][9]. The original email address can remain active as an alias, so messages sent to it can still reach the same inbox [2][8].

What This Means

For many users, this is a major update because Gmail addresses were long treated as permanent once created [7][10]. The new feature is being introduced gradually, and availability may depend on region and account status [5][9].

Why It Matters

This change is helpful for people who want a more professional email name, outgrew an old username, or simply want a cleaner digital identity [6][8]. It also reduces the hassle of moving to a new account and redoing access for email, Drive, YouTube, Maps, and other Google services [2][9].

How It Works

Users who get access will see an option to change their Google Account email in settings, then enter a new available Gmail address and confirm the update [1][9]. Google says the new address cannot already be in use, and in some cases the feature may not yet appear for every user [3][9].
