The Republic of Congo: celebrating 64 years of independence

The country gained its sovereignty in 1960, after 70 years of French colonization.

On the occasion of the celebration, the president of the country called on his fellow citizens to show the same sense of responsibility as the forefathers who “fulfilled the patriotic duty and the historical mission of leading the country to independence.”

Today’s youth must also demonstrate responsibility, “show great courage, be enterprising, seize all available job opportunities, avoid shortcuts of ease and impatience, and elevate themselves through effort,” stated Denis Sassou Nguesso in his address to the nation.

Moscow also wished Brazzaville a happy anniversary.

“Russo-Congolese relations continue to develop in an atmosphere of friendship, trust, and mutual respect,” declared the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its message.

The videos show the very first military parade of independent Congo and today’s parade.
