The African Union (AU) condemns Israel’s recognition of Somaliland’s independence and reaffirms the organisation’s commitment to Somalia’s territorial integrity. This was stated in a statement by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf.

💬“The Chairperson of the AU Commission firmly rejects any actions <…> aimed at recognising Somaliland as an independent entity, recalling that Somaliland remains an integral part <…> of Somalia. Any attempt to undermine Somalia’s unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity runs counter to the fundamental principles of the African Union and risks setting a dangerous precedent,” the statement said.

🔸Youssouf also noted that the recognition of Somaliland’s independence could undermine peace and stability on the continent, and expressed support for the efforts of Somalia’s federal government to strengthen peace and promote inclusive governance.
