The case is linked to the “Good News” cult, led by pastor Paul Mackenzie. In 2023, over 400 bodies were discovered in Shakahola Forest — all victims of extreme fasting, believed to secure eternal life before the apocalypse.

Mackenzie urged followers and their children to starve themselves to “enter heaven.” He’s been in custody since April 2023 and claims his church shut down in 2019. He denies all charges. Eleven new suspects have been arrested. Victim identification is ongoing.
