Tensions are rising along the Liberia–Guinea border after reports that Guinean soldiers crossed into Liberian territory and raised the Guinean flag on Liberian soil.
According to reports from the border region in Lofa County, the incident triggered anger among local residents. Liberian youth reportedly armed themselves with machetes, sticks, and other tools to defend what they believed to be their country’s territory.
Witnesses say the youth confronted the Guinean soldiers and forced them to retreat back across the border. However, the situation escalated when the soldiers reportedly returned the following day, and sporadic gunfire was heard in the area, creating fear among residents.
In response to the growing tension, the Government of Liberia has deployed additional troops from the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) to the border to secure the area and prevent further escalation.
