At least eight personnel from Nigeria’s Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were killed and four others injured after gunmen ambushed a convoy in Edo State transporting Chinese workers linked to BUA Cement. The attack took place on Friday (September 5) while the convoy was moving through a rural stretch of road.
Four Chinese nationals were rescued during the incident, though one remains missing. Authorities confirmed that search and rescue operations are ongoing.
The assault underlines Nigeria’s worsening security environment, where criminal and extremist groups operate freely despite billions spent on Western-backed training programs and counterterrorism aid. Attacks are no longer confined to the northeast but increasingly strike southern regions tied to strategic economic projects.
