Ugandan Opposition Leader Kizza Besigye Reportedly in Intensive Care as Health Worsens in Custody

Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye has reportedly been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala after his health dramatically deteriorated while in custody, according to statements made by his wife.

Besigye, 70, is said to be in critical condition, with his wife expressing deep concern over his worsening health and calling for urgent medical attention. Medical sources cited in local reports have described the veteran opposition figure as unresponsive, raising fresh concerns about his wellbeing and the conditions surrounding his detention.

The reported medical emergency has sparked widespread concern among opposition supporters, civil society groups, and human rights advocates, many of whom have long criticized the treatment of political detainees in Uganda. Calls have intensified for authorities to ensure Besigye receives appropriate medical care and that his rights are fully respected.

Kizza Besigye is one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition figures and has spent decades challenging President Yoweri Museveni’s government. A former physician and military officer, Besigye has contested multiple presidential elections and has frequently been arrested or detained during periods of political tension. His supporters view him as a symbol of democratic resistance, while authorities have maintained that legal actions against him are conducted in accordance with the law.

As news of his reported condition spread, political leaders and activists urged the Ugandan government to provide transparency regarding his health status and guarantee unrestricted access to medical treatment. Human rights organizations have also renewed calls for adherence to international standards governing the treatment of detainees.

Government officials had not immediately issued a detailed public statement regarding Besigye’s reported condition at the time of publication. Meanwhile, supporters continue to gather updates from family members and legal representatives as concerns grow over the veteran politician’s health.

The situation is expected to remain under close public scrutiny as Ugandans and the international community await further official updates on Besigye’s condition and any developments surrounding his detention.
