FORT PORTAL, UGANDA — The Kingdom of Tooro is mourning the death of its long-serving monarch, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi IV, who died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the age of 34.

The announcement was made by Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who said the Omukama died at approximately 10:00 p.m.

“It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of His Majesty the Omukama of Tooro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV,” Rwomiire said in a statement.

He described the death as an immeasurable loss to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and Uganda, while appealing to the Batooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during the mourning period. (Nilepost News)

Crown Will Continue

Alongside the announcement of King Oyo’s death, the Tooro Kingdom delivered an important message concerning the future of the monarchy.

Prime Minister Rwomiire confirmed that King Oyo left behind a Prince who is recognised as his heir, assuring the kingdom that the royal succession will continue.

“The continuity of the Crown is assured. His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom,” Rwomiire said. (Nilepost News)

The identity of the young Prince has not yet been publicly disclosed. The Kingdom indicated that the revelation will take place in accordance with Tooro’s customs and traditions.

The announcement provides an important measure of continuity for the ancient Ugandan monarchy at a moment of profound grief.

A King Who Ascended the Throne as a Child

King Oyo was born on April 16, 1992. He became Omukama of Tooro on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Rwamuhokya Olimi III.

For much of his early reign, the young King was guided by regents and senior members of the royal establishment. As he grew older, he gradually assumed greater responsibility for the affairs and public representation of the kingdom.

His reign ultimately lasted nearly 31 years, making him one of the most recognisable traditional rulers in contemporary Uganda.

A Reign Focused on Tooro’s Future

During his decades on the throne, King Oyo became associated with initiatives involving education, youth development, healthcare, tourism, environmental conservation and the preservation of Tooro’s cultural heritage.

His position also placed him at the intersection of Uganda’s traditional institutions and modern national life. The Tooro Kingdom maintained relations with Uganda’s government while continuing to promote the cultural identity and heritage of the Batooro.

Questions Surrounding His Final Illness

King Oyo’s death follows weeks of uncertainty surrounding reports about his health.

Earlier in August, Tooro Kingdom officials rejected reports that the monarch was seriously ill, saying he was abroad for studies and official engagements. The Kingdom has not officially disclosed a medical cause of death.

Some reports have cited sources claiming that King Oyo had been receiving medical treatment abroad and had been diagnosed with advanced-stage brain cancer. A New Chapter for the Tooro Monarchy

King Oyo’s death closes an extraordinary chapter in the history of Tooro.

He inherited the crown as a three-year-old boy and spent virtually his entire life as Omukama. Over the course of three decades, he grew from a child monarch into the public face of one of Uganda’s most prominent traditional kingdoms.

His death now places Tooro at the beginning of another historic transition.

The confirmation that a Prince has been left as heir means that the royal line will continue. However, the precise succession process and the formal identification of the Prince are expected to be communicated according to the traditions and customs of the Tooro Kingdom.
