Liberian ship becomes the largest container carrier to cross the Panama Canal

The Panama Canal Authority announced that on Friday, a 17,640-container Liberian-flagged commercial vessel broke the record for the largest container ship to pass through the canal in its 110 years of operation.

The 366-meter-long, 51-meter-wide container ship MSC Marie crossed the canal from Mexico’s Pacific port of Manzanillo to a port on the Caribbean coast of Panama. The container ship reportedly paid more than $1.3 million for its passage through the canal.

According to a statement from the Panama Canal Authority, the previous record was held by the 17,312-container Ever Max, which crossed the canal in 2023.

The United States opened the 50-mile (80 km) Panama Canal on August 15, 1914. Since then, more than 1.2 million ships have passed through. The waterway was expanded in 2016 to allow larger and deeper ships to pass through.
