🇳🇪 Niger’s August Coup Attempt Exposes Pressure Inside the Sahel Security System

Niger Regains Control of Key Airbase After Mutiny

NIAMEY, Niger — Niger’s government says its forces have regained control of a key airbase in Niamey after mutinous soldiers attacked strategic positions on August 29.

Reuters reported that Nigerien forces, backed by Russian paramilitary personnel, retook the airbase following fighting around military and government sites in the capital.

The incident comes as Niger continues to confront jihadist groups while restructuring its military and deepening new foreign security partnerships.

The battle for Niger is not only against insurgents. Internal military cohesion is itself a strategic variable.

Political instability can weaken counterinsurgency efforts, disrupt partnerships and increase risks to civilians.

The bigger question: Can Niger build a stable security system while simultaneously fighting an insurgency and reshaping its geopolitical alliances?
