South Africa’s iconic luxury trains, Rovos Rail and The Blue Train, have been recognized as some of the world’s best, according to a recent ranking by Timeout

The ranking, based on a survey conducted by Japan Rail Pass, analyzed Tripadvisor reviews, Instagram hashtags, and global search volumes to create an index score for the world’s top luxury train experiences.

Rovos Rail, a private railway company founded in 1989, earned a remarkable fourth place in the recent rankings for its nostalgic journeys, vintage carriages, and modern comforts. The Blue Train, a luxury train with a history dating back to 1923, secured the sixth place. Known for its lavish accommodations, exquisite dining experiences, and breathtaking views during its 1,600-kilometer journey between Pretoria and Cape Town, The Blue Train continues to embody the epitome of South African luxury travel.

The Rocky Mountaineer in Canada topped the global rating, followed by the GoldenPass Express in Switzerland and The Ghan in Australia.
