Across the African continent, a quiet revolution is underway — not one of tanks and barricades, but of ballots, bold ideas, and brave young people stepping into the political arena. Voices of Today, a groundbreaking documentary series by The African Project (TAP), shines a spotlight on the young leaders who are redefining governance and democracy in their nations.
With Africa’s median age standing at just 19, while the average age of its presidents is 63, this generational divide has long been a symbol of the continent’s leadership challenges. But Voices of Today takes viewers beyond statistics and stereotypes, offering an intimate look into the lives, dreams, and actions of young Africans who are not just demanding a seat at the table—they’re building their own.
Born out of a pivotal moment in African politics—marked by nine military coups across the continent in a short span—the series responds directly to the narrative being pushed by international media. Headlines like “The Return of African Coups” dominate the global press, often framing the continent through a lens of instability and regression. But this TAP series flips the script, showcasing another, often overlooked side of African political life: the rise of youth-driven democratic engagement.
From Sierra Leone to Ghana to Botswana, Voices of Today captures how young people are entering political office, organizing grassroots movements, and pushing for reforms that reflect the realities and aspirations of a new generation. The series follows these leaders as they navigate entrenched systems, challenge old power structures, and work to create a more inclusive and responsive political culture.
In Sierra Leone, we meet local councilors under 30 championing education reform in rural districts. In Ghana, the series profiles young activists who turned viral campaigns into successful bids for public office. And in Botswana, we follow digital-savvy politicians who use technology to engage with constituents in unprecedented ways.
But this is just the beginning. In 2025, TAP plans to expand the series to three more African countries, each with its own unique story of youth empowerment and political transformation. The goal is not only to document these changes but to inspire a broader conversation across the continent—and the diaspora—about the future of African leadership.
As young Africans continue to defy the odds and reimagine what politics can be, Voices of Today stands as a powerful reminder: the future is not waiting to be handed down. It is already being written by a new generation determined to lead with integrity, innovation, and courage.
Stay tuned, because the story of Africa’s next leaders is just getting started.
