The operating license for Unit 1 of South Africa’s 2-unit Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant has been extended following the implementation of safety improvements.

The decision follows a request by state-owned utility Eskom for an extension in 2021, which was granted by the National Nuclear Regulator. Unit 2’s extension application is under review, with its current license valid until November 2025.
