Leaders of the Amhara militia in Ethiopia’s Amhara region have condemned Tigray’s plans to repatriate hundreds of thousands of Tigrayans to territories captured by Amhara fighters during the civil war.
Tensions over the disputed territories persist since the conflict’s end, with Amhara nationalists asserting historical rights to the land. The proposed resettlement has escalated concerns, with Amhara militia leaders accusing Tigrayan officials of “beating a war drum” and warning against forceful actions. Recent clashes in the disputed areas have heightened tensions, prompting thousands to flee.
Despite past alliances, conflicts between Fano militiamen and the federal army underscore ongoing unrest fueled by unresolved territorial disputes. The federal government’s pledge to hold a referendum on the disputed areas’ status remains contested by Fano leaders.
