TOPLINE Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs has reportedly been arrested in Alabama and charged with domestic violence and burglary, weeks after being charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty, the latest trouble for the Super Bowl championship team that has been plagued with troublesome off-season headlines.
KEY FACTS
Buggs, who did not play during the Chiefs’ playoff run but did win his first Super Bowl ring with the team in February, was arrested after police in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, responded to a call at a local residence early Sunday, the NFL reported.
The Tuscaloosa Police Department told NBC News that Buggs was arrested on a domestic violence/burglary charge—which applies when the victim of the crime is the parent, child, current or former romantic partner or roommate of the alleged assailant—and was released on a $5,000 bond (the department did not immediately respond to Forbes’ request for comment Sunday).
No further details of the arrest or of an alleged incident have been released.
The news comes less than three weeks after Buggs turned himself in over misdemeanor animal cruelty charges that came after police officers found two dogs locked on a screened-in back porch in Tuscaloosa with no access to food or water (one of the dogs was later euthanized).
Neighbors said the home was being rented by Buggs and that the dogs had been on the porch for at least 10 days; an attorney for Buggs has since denied the allegations.
BIG NUMBER
Five. That’s how many seasons Buggs has played in the NFL. He played for the Pittsburgh Steelers in his rookie year, then for the Detroit Lions and was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024. He played college football for the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
KEY BACKGROUND
Buggs’ trouble with the law is the latest news painting the Kansas City Chiefs organization in an unflattering light since the team won the Super Bowl last season. Kicker Harrison Butker went viral last month after he gave a commencement speech at Benedictine College, a Catholic school in Kansas, where he told women they’d been told “diabolical lies” about pursuing careers and that they should instead focus on being mothers and wives. The speech also saw Butker complain about growing support for “degenerate cultural values and media,” specifically mentioning abortion, IVF, surrogacy and euthanasia, and call being a member of the LGBTQ+ community a “deadly sin.” In April, an arrest warrant was issued for Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice in Dallas after he allegedly drove 119 mph in a Lamborghini and caused a crash that injured at least four people during a street race. A few weeks later, Rice was accused of punching a photographer at a nightclub. In March, the son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid was in the news after he had a prison sentence commuted by the governor of Missouri. Britt Reid was sentenced to three years in prison in 2022 for drunk driving after he crashed into two cars and injured six people, including two children. One of those children suffered a debilitating head injury, according to USA Today. Reid was released from jail but will remain on house arrest through next October.
