In response to devastating floods caused by heavy rainfall, Burundi’s government has begun relocating around 2000 displaced families to higher ground. The relocation efforts aim to provide shelter and relief to those affected by the flooding.
Despite logistical challenges, including a shortage of materials for makeshift shelters, families are being moved from flooded areas near Gutumba to Matyazo, approximately 30 kilometers away from Bujumbura. The flooding, attributed to rising waters from Lake Tanganyika, has disrupted businesses and infrastructure, including major highways like the Boulevard du Japon. Burundi, heavily reliant on agriculture and donor support, faces significant challenges in addressing the aftermath of the floods, with over 200,000 people affected and widespread destruction of homes and infrastructure reported.
Climate experts link the extreme weather conditions to the El Niño weather phenomenon, underscoring the urgent need for international assistance and long-term resilience measures in the region.
