Local media reported that a “suicide bomber” targeted Al-Burhan on Wednesday morning while he was attending a graduation ceremony for military academy students at the Gebeit Military Institute in the Red Sea state of eastern Sudan.
The reports added that the Sudanese leader was unharmed and was taken to Port Sudan, the country’s temporary capital.
The Sudanese army said in a statement that air defenses intercepted two hostile drones targeting the venue of the ceremony in the city of Gebeit, adding that the attack killed five people and injured several others.
The attack comes against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023.
