In Liberia, Chevron works through its subsidiary Chevron Liberia Limited. In September 2010, the Liberian government granted Chevron approval to acquire interests in three deepwater blocks. A year later, in 2011, Chevron opened an office in the capital of Monrovia. Chevron is the operator of and has a 45 percent interest in Blocks LB-11, LB-12 and LB-14. The three blocks are between 12 and 110 miles (20 to 180 km) south of Monrovia and cover an area of about 1.8 million acres (7,364 sq km). The wells, drilled with the support of several Liberian companies, are Chevron’s first deepwater exploration wells in the country.
