Big Sunspot AR3738 Unleashed 5 M-Class Solar Flares. The strongest event of the period was an M5.3 flare (R2-Moderate) 13/12: 42 UTC. Associated with the event was a Type II radio sweep (est. 297 km/s), however, no discernable CMEs were observed in subsequent coronagraph imagery.
At 13/23:01 UTC, Region 3738 also produced an impulsive M5.0-class flare, followed by an M2.7 solar flare.
Radiation from the flares ionized the top of Earth’s atmosphere, causing multiple shortwave radio blackouts (R2/R1) on the entire sunlit side of the Earth.
