Ecuadorian police stormed the Mexican embassy: What is known so far?

▪️Ecuadorian authorities detained former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas who had been sheltering in the Mexican Embassy in Quito. He was sentenced to six years in prison in December 2023 in a corruption case;

▪️The Mexican government will appeal to the UN International Court of Justice to condemn the actions of the Ecuadorian authorities, Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena said;

▪️Following the attack, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador instructed Barcena to immediately announce the suspension of relations with Ecuador;

▪️Mexican diplomats in Ecuador sustained injuries after the attack, Barcena said;

▪️The Ecuadorian presidential office, in turn, called the police attack on the Mexican diplomatic mission “defense of national sovereignty”;

▪️Jorge Glas arrived at the Mexican embassy in Quito last December to request protection and was granted guest access. On Friday, the Mexican government decided to grant political asylum to Glas. Ecuador described the decision as illegal and demanded that the politician be extradited;

▪️The issuance of a warrant for his arrest in a corruption case involving the Brazilian construction company Oderbrecht occurred after he took refuge at the Mexican diplomatic mission.
