High Court Orders Seizure of Nana Kwame Bediako’s No. 1 Oxford Street Hotel Amid Multi-Million Dollar Legal Battle

Accra, Ghana – Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar and founder of The New Force political movement, has been drawn into one of the most significant legal disputes involving a high-profile commercial property in Ghana after the Accra High Court granted police assistance to facilitate the seizure of the iconic No. 1 Oxford Street Hotel in Osu.

The ruling, delivered by the Commercial Division of the High Court, authorizes a court-appointed Receiver, acting on behalf of UK-based Cola Holdings Limited, to take possession of the luxury property following an ongoing debt recovery process. The decision marks another chapter in a legal battle that has attracted national attention due to the prominence of both the property and its owner.

    Court Grants Police Assistance

According to court proceedings, Cola Holdings Limited applied for police assistance after unsuccessful attempts to take peaceful possession of the property. The company argued that it had lawfully registered its security interest and was entitled to enforce its rights under Ghana’s Borrowers and Lenders Act, 2020 (Act 1052).

Justice Samuel Faraday Johnson ruled that the Receiver had met the legal requirements for police assistance, dismissing objections raised by Kensington Residential Partners 1 Limited, a company associated with Nana Kwame Bediako.

The court emphasized that its order specifically concerns the enforcement process and should not be interpreted as a final determination of all outstanding legal disputes between the parties. (Yen.com.gh – Ghana news.)

    Hotel Management Appeals Decision

Following the ruling, the management of No. 1 Oxford Street Hotel announced that it had filed an appeal challenging the High Court’s decision.

In a public statement, Kensington Residential Partners 1 Limited maintained that the hotel remains operational and under its management. The company also stated that it has sought interim legal relief while awaiting the outcome of the appeal.

Management further argued that there are several related legal proceedings still pending before the courts and urged the public not to draw premature conclusions while litigation continues.

“The hotel remains open for business,” the company said, assuring customers and stakeholders that normal operations continue despite the legal proceedings. (Graphic Online)

    A Landmark Property

Located along Oxford Street in Osu, the striking white building has become one of Accra’s most recognizable luxury developments.

Developed under Nana Kwame Bediako’s real estate interests, the property represents one of several high-end projects associated with the entrepreneur, whose investments span hospitality, residential estates, and mixed-use developments.

Beyond real estate, Bediako has built a reputation as one of Ghana’s most prominent businessmen and philanthropists, earning international recognition for ambitious development projects and youth-focused initiatives.

    Political Implications

The legal development comes as Nana Kwame Bediako continues to lead The New Force, the political movement he founded to challenge Ghana’s traditional two-party system.

After contesting the 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate backed by The New Force, Bediako positioned himself as an advocate for economic transformation, industrialization, and youth empowerment. His movement has continued to attract supporters seeking alternative political leadership.

Political analysts say the ongoing legal dispute could generate increased public scrutiny of the businessman-turned-politician, although the matter remains a commercial legal issue rather than a political case.

Supporters argue that the legal proceedings should be allowed to run their course before conclusions are reached, while critics believe the case raises important questions about corporate governance and financial obligations.

    Legal Battle Continues

The dispute stems from efforts by Cola Holdings Limited to enforce a security interest connected to the property after previous legal proceedings, including matters linked to a judgment from the High Court of England and Wales.

While the High Court has authorized police assistance for the Receiver, the filing of an appeal means the matter is far from concluded.

Legal experts note that appellate proceedings and related applications could determine whether the enforcement action proceeds immediately or is temporarily suspended pending further judicial review. (Graphic Online)

    Looking Ahead

As the legal process unfolds, No. 1 Oxford Street Hotel remains at the center of one of Ghana’s most closely watched commercial disputes. The outcome of the appeal is expected to have implications not only for the ownership and management of the property but also for the broader enforcement of secured lending and commercial judgments in Ghana.

For Nana Kwame Bediako, the case represents a significant challenge as he balances his business interests with his continued role as leader of The New Force. With appeals now before the courts, all eyes will be on the judiciary as it determines the next phase of this high-profile legal battle.
