Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso — Burkina Faso’s armed forces have announced what they describe as one of their most significant counterterrorism victories in recent months, saying they repelled coordinated attacks by suspected jihadist fighters and killed more than 400 militants.

According to the military, the attacks targeted several strategic positions, including Gayéri, Solhan, and Sebba, in a coordinated offensive launched by armed groups linked to Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an al-Qaeda-affiliated organization that has been active across the Sahel. The military said its rapid response, supported by air power and ground operations, successfully pushed back the attackers.

Officials reported that more than 400 suspected terrorists were neutralized during the fighting. Security forces also said they recovered hundreds of motorcycles, weapons, ammunition, communication equipment, and other military supplies allegedly abandoned by the fleeing militants. The army confirmed that three Burkinabè soldiers lost their lives during the operation.

The reported outcome marks a significant setback for JNIM and its allies, who have intensified attacks across the Sahel in recent years. Burkina Faso, along with neighboring Mali and Niger, continues to face persistent security threats from extremist groups seeking to expand their influence across the region.

While the military has hailed the operation as a major victory, independent verification of the reported casualty figures remains difficult due to restricted access to the affected areas. Conflict analysts have consistently noted that casualty claims made by all parties during ongoing fighting should be treated with caution until independently confirmed.

The latest clashes highlight the continuing struggle for stability in the Sahel, where governments are working to contain insurgent violence while protecting civilian populations. Despite ongoing security challenges, Burkina Faso says it remains committed to strengthening national defense capabilities and restoring peace in areas affected by terrorism.

As military operations continue, observers say sustained regional cooperation, intelligence sharing, and support for affected communities will remain critical in addressing the long-term security challenges facing the Sahel.
