The Capitol Building, which houses the Liberian Legislature, was a scene of political tension on Thursday when some members of the Lower House tried to remove Speaker Fonati Koffa from his position. The plan was, however, foiled when supporters of the Speaker – who is out of the country – disrupted the proceedings and locked the doors to the Chamber.

Lawmakers who signed the resolution for the Speaker’s removal were allegedly promised U.S.$25,000 each by Vice President Jeremiah Koung and Deputy Speaker Thomas Fallah. Both officials have denied the claim.
