Mars to rendezvous with Jupiter

On August 14, 2024, Mars will appear reddish as it passes in front of Jupiter in a celestial event known as a conjunction. They will appear to be almost touching, but they will actually be separated by a huge distance in space.

For most people in Africa, the two planets will appear closest on the morning of August 14. Just look toward the eastern half of the sky; you’ll be able to see them climb slowly into the sky before disappearing from view at dawn.

We won’t see Mars this close to Jupiter again until December 1, 2033.
