Tanzania’s strategic location makes its participation in the development of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) a promising area of international cooperation, as Tanzanian ports are connected to landlocked countries in the region, according to the Russian Ministry of Transport.
Discussions on extending the INSTC to Africa, including the establishment of regular shipping lines, began at the 2023 Russia-Africa Summit. As part of this expansion, Russia is exploring the possibility of establishing a port logistics hub and cargo base on the east coast of Africa.
The INSTC is a planned 7200-km-long multimodal route that will connect St. Petersburg with ports in Iran and India. It is an alternative to the sea route connecting Europe, the Persian Gulf countries, and the Indian Ocean via the Suez Canal.
