Monrovia, Liberia — Liberian security authorities have arrested a Colombian national and a Spanish national in connection with one of the country’s largest ongoing cocaine trafficking investigations, marking a significant breakthrough in the fight against transnational organized crime.
The arrests were carried out during a joint security operation in Duazon, near Monrovia, following weeks of intelligence gathering linked to the seizure of 237.6 kilograms of cocaine, valued at more than US$19 million, at Roberts International Airport (RIA) in June. Authorities say the investigation led officers to a suspected stash house where the two foreign nationals were taken into custody alongside several Liberian suspects. A firearm was also recovered during the raid.
According to Liberian investigators, the two suspects have been identified as Johann David Garces Grajales, who reportedly holds both Colombian and Spanish passports, and Srdan Seles, a Serbian national. However, security officials say they are working to verify the identities of the foreign suspects, noting that international drug trafficking syndicates frequently use false identities and forged travel documents.
During the operation, authorities uncovered an even larger cache of suspected cocaine weighing approximately 3,971 kilograms (nearly four metric tons). The drugs have an estimated international street value of about US$318 million, making it one of the largest cocaine seizures ever recorded in Liberia and among the most significant narcotics interceptions in West Africa.
Investigators believe the suspects were involved in an international drug trafficking network using Liberia as a transit point for cocaine shipments destined for overseas markets, particularly Europe. The latest arrests are part of an expanded investigation launched after the June interception of cocaine concealed in cargo boxes that were reportedly bound for export through Brussels Airlines.
Security officials say intelligence gathered from the earlier airport seizure enabled investigators to trace the suspected criminal network to the warehouse where the latest operation was conducted. Authorities described the discovery as a major breakthrough in dismantling a sophisticated transnational drug trafficking organization operating across multiple countries.
The investigation remains ongoing, with forensic analysis of the seized narcotics continuing and additional arrests expected as authorities seek to identify everyone connected to the network. Officials have also indicated that international law enforcement agencies may become involved due to the cross-border nature of the case.
The cocaine seizures have intensified public scrutiny of Liberia’s efforts to combat organized crime and strengthen border security. President Joseph Boakai’s administration has pledged to pursue all individuals linked to the trafficking operation and ensure those responsible are prosecuted under Liberian law.
The latest arrests underscore growing concerns about West Africa’s role as a transit corridor for South American cocaine destined for European markets. Security experts say closer cooperation between African and international law enforcement agencies will be essential in disrupting increasingly sophisticated trafficking networks operating across the region.
