A Vision for the Future
Founded in 2026 and headquartered at the Port of Long Beach in California, Bluecore Energy is developing compact, water-cooled small modular nuclear reactors designed to operate on floating barges. The innovative concept aims to provide clean electricity to ports, coastal communities, critical infrastructure, data centers, and cargo ships while reducing dependence on fossil fuels. (AfroTech)
According to Asante, the company’s mission is to democratize access to clean energy by making nuclear power more flexible, scalable, and accessible for communities that need reliable electricity.
“My goal is to build generation-defining technology while creating opportunities for communities that have historically been underrepresented in deep tech,” Asante said in announcing the funding round. (AfroTech)
From Startup Builder to Nuclear Pioneer
Before founding Bluecore Energy, Asante built an impressive career across transportation, aerospace, and venture capital.
A graduate of Tufts University, he launched his entrepreneurial journey while still in college before joining Uber, where he helped develop the company’s freight strategy. He later worked on the launch teams at Elroy Air, an autonomous aircraft company, and Arc, an electric maritime technology company. His experience also includes serving as a venture partner, giving him insight into both building startups and investing in them. (AfroTech)
Those experiences ultimately inspired him to tackle one of the world’s biggest challenges—delivering clean, reliable energy at scale.
Historic $10 Million Raise
Bluecore Energy’s $10 million funding round was led by Slauson & Co. and included investments from Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen, Hartbeat Ventures, Harlem Capital, Precursor Ventures, Visible Hands VC, Capital Factory and several other venture firms and angel investors. The round was oversubscribed, reflecting strong investor demand for the company’s vision and technology. (AfroTech)
Notably, the investor group intentionally included several Black-led venture capital firms, reinforcing Asante’s commitment to increasing diversity in deep technology and advanced engineering.
Breaking Barriers
The nuclear energy sector has historically seen limited diversity among founders and executives. Asante’s achievement represents a breakthrough, demonstrating that Black entrepreneurs can lead innovation in one of the world’s most technically demanding industries.
Industry observers say his success could inspire a new generation of founders to pursue careers in science, engineering, and advanced manufacturing.
Austin Clements, co-founder of Slauson & Co., described Asante as a visionary entrepreneur capable of building a transformational company that could redefine energy infrastructure. (AfroTech)
Building the Future
Bluecore Energy has already begun advancing its technology, securing testing equipment, a barge, and facilities to accelerate development of its compact nuclear reactor systems. The company aims to deliver safe, reliable, carbon-free power to ports and coastal industries that require uninterrupted electricity. (citybiz)
As global demand for clean energy continues to grow, Bluecore Energy hopes to play a significant role in helping governments and industries transition away from fossil fuels while improving energy security.
A New Chapter in Innovation
Kofi Asante’s historic fundraising success is more than a financial milestone—it is a powerful statement about the changing face of innovation. By becoming the first Black founder of a nuclear energy startup to secure $10 million in venture funding, he has opened new doors for diversity in deep technology and demonstrated that groundbreaking ideas can emerge from leaders with bold visions and unconventional paths.
As Bluecore Energy moves from concept to commercial development, the world will be watching to see whether Asante’s ambitious vision can transform the future of nuclear power and inspire a new generation of innovators.
