A recent gang attack in the Haitian town of Pont-Sondé has resulted in at least 115 deaths, marking one of the deadliest assaults by armed groups in the country’s recent history. According to reports, this violence is part of a larger pattern of escalating gang activity in Haiti, which has seen gangs grow in strength and expand territorial control over key areas, including the capital, Port-au-Prince .

The rise in gang violence in Haiti has been linked to the country’s ongoing political instability, economic challenges, and lack of effective law enforcement. Major gang factions, such as the G9 coalition led by former police officer Jimmy “Barbecue” Chérizier, have gained prominence. These groups engage in extortion, kidnappings, and control of fuel and transportation routes, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis across the nation.
The security forces in Haiti have struggled to contain the surge in violence, with several officers also falling victim to these attacks. As law enforcement and local populations remain largely unprotected, citizens often form vigilante groups to counter the gangs, sometimes resulting in violent clashes. This latest incident in Pont-Sondé adds to the alarming death toll from gang violence, underscoring the urgent need for international assistance and intervention to restore order and protect civilians .
Myriam Fièvre, mayor of the nearby city of Saint-Marc, said Wednesday that the toll had risen to 115 and would likely keep rising because authorities are still looking for bodies and haven’t been able to access certain areas of the town.
