The Ghanaian government abruptly canceled the major Pan-African convention just hours before thousands of anticipated guests, including renowned figures such as Professor P. L. O. Lumumba, Julius Malema, Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, and Peter Obi, were set to gather. These individuals are indisputably pivotal figures in the movement for the advancement of Africa and Pan-Africanism. Regrettably, thousands of patrons had already assembled at Independence Square for the event when news of the cancellation reached them.

The unexpected decision, which caught many by surprise, reflects the government’s apparent reluctance to accommodate the event organizers. No alternative venue or solution was provided for hosting the convention. Attendees from around the world had flown in to promote Pan-Africanism and engage in discussions on ways to enhance Africa, including Ghana. Ghana, with its historical significance as the place where Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah once declared, “the independence of Ghana meant nothing if the continent of Africa was left behind,” was considered the ideal location to kickstart the message of Pan-Africanism.

However, 67 years after Nkrumah’s proclamation, the cancellation of the New Africa Convention on the same grounds where Ghana’s Founding Fathers had congregated sent shockwaves through the global Pan-African community. Dr. Nadia Adongo Fynn, Deputy Director of the Diaspora Affairs Directorate at the Office of the President, attributed the cancellation to an “unforeseen” state event scheduled at the same venue. Yet, no further details or clarification were provided, leaving many skeptical, both within Ghana and across the continent.

Critics argue that the cancellation stems from President Nana Akufo-Addo’s fear of the resurgent Pan-Africanism movement and concerns over potential exposure of his government’s weaknesses. The abrupt decision not only frustrated the participants but also shed light on the impact of corruption and external influence on African nations. Despite the setback, the Pan-African conference remains undeterred, as it continues to be an essential platform for discussing change and progress for Africa. The African people are determined to move forward, and whether in Ghana or another African country, Pan-Africanism will persist. Africa is awake, and the call for change echoes louder than ever.
