Togo’s opposition has filed a lawsuit at the ECOWAS Court of Justice to contest a constitutional reform switching the country to a parliamentary system amid rising political tension and the upcoming legislative elections on April 29.
Arguing that the reform was approved by a parliament with an expired mandate and without proper public consultation, the opposition is pressing for the annulment of the changes, which they say undermine democratic procedures.
According to the law passed, the parliament will elect the president under a new system that introduces parliamentary government and reduces the presidential term to four years with a two-term limit.
