🇪🇨 Priest Dies After Large Crucifix Falls During Livestreamed Mass in Ecuador

GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR — A Catholic priest died after a large wooden crucifix fell from behind the altar and struck him during a livestreamed Mass in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on Saturday, October 17, 2026.

The priest was identified as Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, parish priest of Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro (Our Lady of Perpetual Help) Church and a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists. Crucifix Falls Without Warning

Video from the Mass shows Father Sánchez Molinari standing behind the altar as the large wooden crucifix mounted on the wall behind him suddenly detached and fell forward.

The priest did not appear to see the crucifix coming. It struck him from behind, leaving parishioners visibly shocked. People immediately rushed toward the altar to assist him while others called for emergency medical help. (NBC Los Angeles)

The incident was captured during a livestream of the religious service, and footage subsequently circulated widely across social media.

Cause of the Collapse Remains Unclear

The circumstances that caused the heavy crucifix to detach have not been established publicly.

Early reports have not identified whether the collapse was caused by deterioration of the structure, a failure in its mounting system, or another factor. The Archdiocese has confirmed the priest’s death but has not provided a definitive explanation for why the crucifix fell. (News.com.au)

The incident has consequently raised questions about the inspection and maintenance of large architectural and religious fixtures installed above areas where clergy and congregants regularly gather.

A Shock to the Local Catholic Community

Father Sánchez Molinari’s death has prompted mourning among the Catholic community in Guayaquil and within the Redemptorist religious order.

The Archdiocese of Guayaquil expressed its condolences to his religious community, family and friends, remembering the priest in prayer following the tragedy. (EWTN News)

The death also demonstrates the unpredictable risks that can emerge during public religious gatherings, where heavy architectural or decorative structures may be positioned directly above people.

The Video and Its Wider Impact

Because the Mass was being broadcast live, the accident was recorded as it happened. The footage has since circulated across social media platforms, including TikTok.

Panafrican News is publishing the report in the public-interest context of documenting a significant international incident. Viewers should be aware that footage of the incident is disturbing.

Panafrican News will continue to follow any official findings concerning the cause of the crucifix’s collapse.
