Today, we remember Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah — not simply for the day he was born, but for the idea he helped place at the centre of Africa’s modern story:
Africa must determine its own future.
Nkrumah understood independence as more than lowering a flag or transferring political power. To him, freedom meant building the economic strength, political unity, intellectual confidence and collective agency needed for Africans to shape their own destiny.
That vision still asks something of us.
What does African independence mean in an age of technology, global capital, artificial intelligence, migration and a rapidly changing world?
Perhaps Founders’ Day is not only a moment to look back.
It is a moment to ask what we are building forward.
One continent. Many nations. A shared future.
