Rebel forces from the group “March 23 Movement” (M23) have successfully seized two localities near the town of Kanyabayonga (North Kivu province) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after intense fighting, local radio station reported.
The villages of Miriki and Kimaki were captured by the rebels on June 27 following fierce battles with the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The conflict has triggered a refugee exodus from the area.
A preliminary report indicated five deaths, including one child, along with several injured.
