🇳🇬 Six Killed as Nigerian Troops Ambush Suspected ISWAP Fighters in Borno

BORNO, NIGERIA — Nigerian troops reportedly killed six suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters during an ambush operation in Borno State on October 25, 2026, according to a military statement cited by P.M. News Nigeria.

The operation was reportedly conducted by troops of the 29 Task Force Brigade operating under Operation HADIN KAI, the Nigerian military’s counter-insurgency operation in the northeast.

According to the intelligence report, Captain Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer at the Headquarters of Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, in Maiduguri, provided details of the operation.

The reported engagement forms part of continuing Nigerian military operations against armed groups operating across Borno and other parts of Nigeria’s northeast.

Ambush Operation

Military forces reportedly targeted suspected ISWAP fighters during the October 25 operation. The reported outcome was six militants killed, although the intelligence report currently carries an “unverified” status.

No independently verified information was provided regarding the identities of those killed, the precise circumstances of the engagement, or whether military personnel or civilians were also affected.

Borno Remains a Key Security Theater

Borno State has remained at the center of Nigeria’s long-running conflict with Boko Haram and ISWAP. Nigerian security forces continue to conduct ground operations and other counter-insurgency activities aimed at disrupting militant networks and their ability to operate across the region.

For residents, however, the security situation extends beyond battlefield encounters. Attacks, displacement, disrupted economic activity and restrictions on movement can have significant consequences for communities across the northeast.

The latest reported ambush therefore comes within a much broader security campaign rather than representing an isolated incident.

Intelligence Assessment

Status: Unverified

The reported six militant deaths should be treated as a military-source claim pending independent confirmation. Panafrican.email will distinguish confirmed developments from preliminary battlefield reporting as additional information becomes available.

The incident illustrates the continuing importance of monitoring security developments in Nigeria’s northeast, particularly as military operations target militant formations and attempt to prevent attacks against civilian and military targets.
