Record Natural Gas Exports from the U.S. in 2023

🇺🇸

In 2023, the United States witnessed a significant milestone in natural gas exports, with a remarkable increase of 10% compared to 2022, reaching a record-breaking 20.9 billion cubic feet per day.

More than half of these exports comprised liquefied natural gas (LNG), marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s energy landscape. Notably, LNG exports surged by 12% (1.3 Bcf/d) over the course of the year, culminating in a historic high of 13.6 Bcf/d in December 2023.

This surge in LNG exports began in 2016 when the Sabine Pass LNG facility, the inaugural LNG export terminal in the lower 48 states, commenced operations. Since then, the United States has emerged as a key supplier, catering to nearly half of Europe’s LNG import needs.

Furthermore, pipeline exports of natural gas also experienced notable growth, expanding by 7% to Canada (2.8 billion cubic feet per day) and by 8% to Mexico (6.1 billion cubic feet per day) in the same year.

The robust performance of both LNG and pipeline exports underscores the United States’ increasing role as a major player in the global energy market.
