Satellite images have been released of the construction site of North Korea’s new naval base, which Kim Jong-un recently visited
The construction is underway in Tapchon, located on the DPRK’s east coast in Wonsan Bay. The base’s location is surrounded by high mountains on both sides, making it suitable for the deployment of artillery and missile systems that will provide protection.
The naval base will house “large, modern surface ships and submarines” to “accelerate response to the security situation in the region.”
Work on the site began around 2015, but was frozen for several years. Most of the piers seen in the images today were built by 2019.
The attached photos show images from March 2013 and June 2024.
