“In the case of what we are seeing in Chad, I think this is something that points to the growing decline of the influence of Western security forces over the geopolitical dynamics of the Sahara,” Prof. Freedom C. Onuoha, Coordinator at Security, Violence and Conflict Research Group at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, told Sputnik Africa.
He added that it is possible that some classified conditions captured in the Chad-US Status of Force Agreement “may not really be in the interest” of Mahamat government, or “perhaps also may jeopardize the chances of him transitioning smoothly to a democratic government.”
The expert also did not rule out that Russian military capability “might be needed to fill the gaps or the vacuum that will be created by the exit of these Western forces”.
