Thousands Protest in Accra Against Illegal Mining, Demand Government Action

Thousands of protesters flooded the streets of Accra last week, demanding an end to illegal mining practices, locally known as ‘Galamsey’, which have devastated large swathes of Ghana’s environment. The demonstrations, which took place from Thursday through Saturday, reflect growing public frustration with the government’s perceived inaction on the issue.

Protesters vowed to maintain pressure on authorities until decisive action is taken to combat Galamsey, citing the severe damage the practice has caused to the country’s rivers, forests, and farmlands. The illegal mining activities have not only led to environmental degradation but also raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of Ghana’s natural resources.
