Turkey reportedly in discussions to establish a site for ballistic missile tests and a spaceport in Somalia

Ankara’s ballistic missile program requires long-range testing, and Somalia’s strategic location on the eastern tip of mainland Africa provides an ideal location for launching missiles towards the Indian Ocean, Western media reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

Moreover, the unnamed sources explained that the country’s proximity to the equator makes it a suitable site for a spaceport, as launches from near the equator can increase the range and efficiency of space rockets.

Turkey’s aspirations to join the global space race, with plans for a rocket launch already underway, could potentially see Somalia as a launch site, according to the report. The deal would address concerns about the risk of debris falling into populated areas or neighboring countries during missile testing.

Turkish officials are reportedly confident that Somalia will approve their request, given the fact that a 2015 defense-industry cooperation agreement between the two nations allows for joint military equipment projects.

In addition, Turkey’s strong presence in Somalia, including the establishment of its largest overseas military base in Mogadishu and the training of Somali soldiers, underscores the close ties between the two countries.

Neither the Turkish nor Somali governments have officially confirmed the plans for the site for the ballistic missile test site or the spaceport.
