Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has decided to raise the amount collected from 100,000 to 200,000 euros a year: it must be paid by wealthy foreigners living in the country and investing in its economy. In this way, the authorities hope to cover the budget deficit, which last year amounted to 7.4% of GDP.
The measure was received with mixed reactions: experts expressed concerns that after its adoption, investment in Italy would be significantly reduced, and Milan as a business center, where a significant portion of foreign entrepreneurs’ investments are concentrated, could suffer in particular.
